General questions

What does TPCC actually do?

We are a recruitment company, not a care agency, this means clients can hire carers directly, cutting out the ongoing middleman and saving you thousands of pounds per year.

Our process:
1) We get to know exactly what you need which will aid us in finding the right person.
2) We search our database and beyond for the right person and provide you with a shortlist of suitable candidates.
3) We arrange for you to interview these candidates, online initially and then in person (if time and logistics permit).

You then engage and pay the carer directly, who works on a self-employed basis.

What is different about using TPCC compared to a traditional home care agency?

With TPCC, you simply pay us a one-off fee (see pricing below) and then pay the carer directly – a rate that is set by you as opposed to a third party.

Regular agencies and various online platforms charge an ongoing markup, often as high as 30% even though their ongoing weekly involvement can be minimal. A weekly markup of £400 works out at £20,000 over the course of a year. By removing this cost, you are able to spend less on care and/or use the funds to pay more to the carer, making the role more attractive.

What type of roles do you recruit for?

Our area of speciality is live-in care, however we are also able to help find live-out carers too, depending on your location.

Which geographical areas do you cover?

We place carers for clients in all parts of the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). From time to time we also work with clients overseas on an ad-hoc basis; our ability to do this depends on the country and the circumstances.

How long does it take to find someone?

It’s best to allow a couple of weeks so you aren’t forced into rushing a decision, however if you do need someone more urgently, we can usually find someone to start in a matter of days. It depends mainly on the details of the job and how quickly you’re able to make a decision.

What is the typical rota?

The most commonplace is to have 2 carers rotating on a 2 week on / 2 week off basis; while some opt for 3 or 4 week rotations. This model means you have 24/7/365 coverage and the carers take their holidays and days off during their “off” rotation, while the other carer is covering.

In some situations, you may wish to consider a full-time carer but it’s worth bearing in mind they will need days off and holidays; if this is problematic for you it’s likely to become a sticking point.

How do I decide what is more suitable between a care home and care at home?

This very much depends on your circumstances however below are a list of factors to consider:
• Where will your loved one be happiest?
• How much support is required? Care homes are staffed 24/7, but it’s unreasonable to expect a live-in carer to be awake and working 24/7.
• One-on-one attention vs one-to-many (exacerbated when there are staff shortages)
• Food: you have complete control over your diet when you stay at home
• Routine: you have complete control over your daily routine when you stay at home; you don’t need to fit into the carers scheduled rounds.
• Finance: a care home is usually one set fee including bills and food. If staying at home, you need to have enough finances to run the household as you do normally and pay the carer.

Financial questions

What are your fees?

One live-in carer — £2,000 + VAT.
Two live-in carers (as part of one recruitment campaign) — £3,000 + VAT.

How much do we need to pay the carer?

The good news is that you’re in control of this.

We would recommend you pay a live-in carer £1,000-£1,500 per week however there are numerous factors that will make the job more or less desirable, not only the fee. Other factors that influence the desirability of the role include location, working hours, intensity of the role, amount of support provided by others (such as other staff, family members), night time expectations, household duties, location, shift pattern, politeness of client, etc.

What about days off and holidays?

If you have 2 carers working on a 2, 3 or 4 week rotation, you don’t need to worry about days off or holidays as the carer simply has their breaks during their “off” rotation. If you only wish to engage one carer that works full-time, then they will usually require one or two consecutive days off per week, as well as holidays throughout the year.

Will the carer help at night?

Yes — it’s important to be as detailed and honest as possible regarding what a typical night looks like. We understand that sometimes this changes or is hard to predict, but be as honest and up front as you can so that the carer’s expectations are suitably managed. Carers have different policies regarding night time interruptions, with some charging extra if there are numerous significant disturbances throughout the night.

What duration is the contract?

Normally, contracts are open-ended, however you’re also able to arrange care for a short-term basis if you know in advance you only need care for a short time.

What if we don’t like the carer or the carer leaves?

We encourage face-to-face interviews prior to roles starting, so that you can really get to know the carer and vice versa.

We do offer a 60 day guarantee, meaning that if it doesn’t work out in the first 60 days, we’ll find a replacement carer free of charge.

What are the hidden costs?

TPCC charges just a simple one-off fee. The amount you pay the carer is set by you. It is worth paying attention to the service agreement that the carer provides; some may include extra charges such as if they are having to work through the night.

Do I have to provide food?

Unless you or the carer have any uncommon dietary requirements, the norm is that your weekly food shop includes enough food for the carer to eat too.

Can I charge the carer for bills or accommodation?

No, it’s an expectation in the industry that accommodation and bills are included at no extra charge.

Can the carer charge me for travel?

The norm is that if a carer is expected to drive you around in their own vehicle, as part of their role, to charge mileage at the going rate (currently 55p per mile).

In terms of travel between their home and yours at the start and end of their shift, this isn’t usually included though some carers request this and it’s at your discretion. For clients in remote locations, this may help make the role more attractive.

Do we need to pay for insurance or tax / PAYE?

No, the carer is self employed and therefore responsible for their own insurance and tax.

All our carers are thoroughly vetted by our experienced team with a view of being able to place the right carers with the right clients. Our screening is multi-faceted and includes the following checks and assessments:

Can I meet the carer beforehand?

Yes! We encourage you to initially interview by video and then do a face-to-face interview if time and logistics allow. You should only go ahead with a carer you’re happy with; don’t ever feel rushed or pressured into taking someone you aren’t comfortable with.

What roles and duties does a carer do?

It’s important we understand the requirements here so that we can find you the right person. The list of duties varies from client to client, however generally speaking, their role is to help their client continue to live a fulfilling life and do all the tasks required to enable this. Below are the majority of tasks that can be part of a carers job description:

Can I specify whether I’d like a male/female carer?

Yes. The Equality Act 2010 allows such requests to be made in the care sector, particularly where personal or intimate care is involved.

Can the carer drive? Do they provide their own car?

You can specify your requirements here so that we find someone suitable. The majority of our carers drive and have their own car, though some have a license but no car or no licence at all.
